A severance agreement is a legal contract between an employer and an employee that outlines the rights and responsibilities of each party when an employee is terminated. These agreements are oftentimes drafted to benefit the employer and generally include a release of claims, which is a waiver or release of liability that protects the employer from lawsuits. These agreements are not required by law.
